Lakadong Turmeric is derived from the word 'Lakadong' which means the name of a village located one in East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat and the other at West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai. Both of the mentioned villages are located in the state of Meghalaya in India.

The Lakadong turmeric root is also used widely in making medicine. The Lakadong Turmeric comprises a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin, which is often used to colour foods and cosmetics.
Lakadong Turmeric is available in some of villages both in East & West Jaintia Hills District as these areas are blessed by God with good quality of soil which can produce high curcumin range from 7% to 12% as compared to other areas which contains only within 6% curcumin.
